Discover the best time to visit Mozambique for sunny beaches, warm seas, and great safaris.
Jun - Aug & Dec
The dry winter months and festive season bring the best conditions for island escapes and safaris. Calm seas and clear visibility make diving and snorkeling superb, while Gorongosa offers excellent game viewing. It’s the busiest time to travel, so early bookings are recommended.
Apr - May & Sept - Nov
These transitional months strike the perfect balance of good weather, fewer crowds, and great value. April and May bring lush green scenery after the rains, while September to November is prime for marine encounters such as whale sharks, manta rays, and turtle nesting along the coast.
Jan - Mar
Hot, humid weather and summer rains make this the quietest time to visit. Some lodges close and travel can be more challenging, but the landscapes are vibrant, beaches are uncrowded, and adventurous travellers may enjoy rewarding cultural experiences and whale shark sightings.

Yes. We run tours that link Kruger National Park with the Mozambican coast, giving you the Big Five and barefoot beach time in one trip.
Some routes also include a short stop in Eswatini along the way, offering more wildlife and culture.
We recommend spending time in Kruger first, then continuing to Mozambique’s coast for snorkelling, diving, and swimming.
Around 10 to 14 days works well. To experience peak game viewing alongside warmer coastal weather, we recommend this route between August and October.
Both group and private options are available, with flexible pacing on each leg.
For a proper Mozambique experience, we recommend at least 3-4 days on the coast. That gives you time to settle in, enjoy the ocean, and fit in activities like diving or a dhow cruise.
If you’re combining Mozambique with a Kruger safari and possibly Eswatini, 10 to 14 days works best. This gives you a solid stretch on safari, time to break up the journey, and enough beach time to actually unwind.
Shorter trips are possible, but the travel distances on an overland route mean you’ll get more value from a longer itinerary.
Yes, Mozambique is one of the top diving and snorkelling destinations in Southern Africa. The Indian Ocean here is warm, clear, and rich with marine life.
Tofo and Ponta do Ouro are especially well known for whale sharks and manta rays, which can be seen year-round but are most active from October to March.
Reef diving is excellent along the whole southern coast, with good visibility and plenty of options for beginners and certified divers.
Snorkelling is easy to organise from the beach or on a dhow trip, and you don’t need to be experienced to enjoy it.
Yes, most travellers now need to apply online before travelling to Mozambique. The rules changed on 16 February 2026 when the Mozambican government launched a new online system, so it’s important to plan ahead rather than rely on older information.
For UK, US, Canadian, Australian, New Zealand and most EU travellers:
You’ll need to apply for an Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) at least 48 hours before departure. The ETA costs approximately $48 per person and is applied for through the official portal at evisa.gov.mz.
South African and SADC passport holders:
You can still enter visa-free for short stays.
A few practical tips:
Please note: Visa regulations and fees can change without notice. The information above reflects the most recent updates at the time of writing, but we strongly recommend checking directly with your nearest Mozambican embassy, consulate, or the official portal at evisa.gov.mz before travelling. It remains each traveller’s responsibility to ensure they have the correct documentation for entry.
Yes, Mozambique is a malaria area, but with the right precautions it’s very manageable — millions of travellers visit every year without issue.
Risk levels vary by region. Maputo city and parts of the southern coast are considered lower risk, while rural and northern areas carry higher risk. The rainy season (November to April) is when mosquitoes are most active, but malaria is present year-round.
Anti-malaria medication is generally recommended, and your doctor or travel clinic can advise on what suits you.
Alongside tablets, simple habits make a big difference: use insect repellent in the evenings, wear long sleeves at dusk, and sleep under a net where provided. Most lodges and camps are well set up for this.
Always check with your doctor or a travel health clinic before travelling.
