Best Time to Visit Garden Route
The Garden Route offers different experiences throughout the year, with each season bringing its own charm.

- FEB
- MAR
- APR
- MAY
- JUN
- JUL
- AUG

- OCT
- NOV
- DEC
Low Season
Jun - Aug
Cooler temperatures and a chance of rain mark the winter months, especially around Knysna and Tsitsikamma. Daytime highs range from 16–20°C, but the region stays lush and green. This is the best time for whale watching along the coast, and the quieter atmosphere makes for a more relaxed travel experience.
Shoulder Season
Mar - May & Sept - Nov
Mild weather, fewer crowds, and calm conditions make these months great for hiking, wildlife viewing, and scenic drives. From February to May, days are still warm and mostly dry. September to November brings fresh greenery and wildflowers, especially in forested and inland areas.
Peak Season
Dec - Feb
Hot and plenty of sunshine make this the best time for beaches and coastal activities. Temperatures often reach the high 20s°C, and conditions are ideal for swimming, kayaking, and exploring the coastline.
Garden Route Travel FAQs
When is the best time to visit the Garden Route?
Honestly, the Garden Route is one of those rare destinations where there isn’t a bad time to visit — it really depends on what you’re after.
If you want long beach days and sunshine, December to February is your window, with temperatures in the high 20s°C and the whole coastline buzzing with energy.
Prefer a quieter trip with great hiking? March to May is ideal — the summer crowds have gone, the weather is still warm, and the forests are stunning.
Winter (June to August) gets a bit of a bad reputation, but whale watchers absolutely love it — southern right whales come close to shore along the coast from around June onwards, and the region is far more peaceful.
Spring (September to November) might actually be our favourite — wildflowers, fresh greenery, comfortable temperatures, and the Otter Trail at its most beautiful.
Are there family-friendly Garden Route tours?
Yes, the Garden Route is genuinely one of the best places in South Africa to travel with kids. The combination of beaches, forests, wildlife, and adventure activities means there’s always something to keep everyone happy, whatever the ages.
Detour Africa offers family Garden Route tours with child-friendly accommodation, relaxed pacing, and highlights like game drives, Addo Elephant National Park, the Cango Caves, and forest walks that kids absolutely love.
If you’re travelling with very young children or have a specific pace in mind, a private tour gives you full flexibility — no fixed schedule, no rushing. The route runs approximately 300km between George and Storms River, so distances between stops are manageable and never overwhelming for families.
What can I expect from a Garden Route tour?
The Garden Route is one of the most varied and rewarding road trips in Africa. The Garden Route stretches roughly 300km along South Africa’s southern coastline from Mossel Bay to Storms River, and in that distance you’ll go from dramatic ocean cliffs to ancient indigenous forests to wildlife-rich game reserves.
Most itineraries include game drives (either in private reserves or Addo Elephant National Park), time in Knysna on the lagoon, walks through Tsitsikamma National Park, and a visit to the extraordinary Cango Caves near Oudtshoorn. If you’re feeling brave, Bloukrans Bridge offers the world’s highest commercial bungee jump at 216 metres — completely optional, but unforgettable.
Tours run in small groups with an experienced local guide handling everything, so you can just focus on enjoying the ride.
Can I visit the Garden Route as a solo traveller?
The Garden Route is an excellent destination for solo travellers, and Detour Africa’s small group Garden Route tours are specifically well-suited to those travelling alone. Groups are typically small (2 to 12 people), creating a sociable and safe environment where solo travellers can meet like-minded adventurers from around the world. All logistics, transport, accommodation, and activities are handled by an experienced guide, removing the challenges of navigating an unfamiliar region independently. Solo travellers are not charged single supplements on most group departure dates. Tours depart regularly from Cape Town, making it easy to join a scheduled itinerary without the need to self-drive or organise private transport.
Can I customise my Garden Route tour?
Yes, if our group departures don’t quite fit what you have in mind, a private Garden Route tour is absolutely an option. Private tours work especially well for families, couples, or groups of four or more friends who want to travel at their own pace without compromising on any of the highlights.
Want to spend an extra day in Knysna? Skip the bungee and add a wine tasting instead? Build in a night at a specific lodge you’ve been eyeing? All of that is possible. Our travel consultants will work with you from scratch to put together an itinerary that actually fits your trip rather than the other way around.
How fit do I need to be for a Garden Route tour?
You don’t need to be particularly fit to enjoy the Garden Route — most of the experience involves scenic drives, game drives, and easy walks at a comfortable pace.
That said, there are optional activities for those who want more of a physical challenge: sections of the Otter Trail, canoeing on the Storms River, and some of the forest hikes in Tsitsikamma require a reasonable level of fitness. The key word there is optional — you can always sit those out and enjoy a coffee with a view instead, and nobody will judge you for it. If you have any health or mobility concerns, just mention it when you book and we’ll make sure the right tour is matched to you.
What should I pack for a Garden Route tour?
The Garden Route has a habit of giving you warm sunshine one hour and a cool forest breeze the next, so layers are your best friend.
Comfortable, casual clothes work for most of the trip, but bring a fleece or light jacket for evenings and for the Tsitsikamma area, which tends to be noticeably cooler. Sturdy walking shoes are a must for forest trails, and swimwear is essential for beach stops along the coast. A packable rain jacket is worth throwing in regardless of when you travel — the region earns its lush, green landscape somehow.
Beyond that: hat, SPF 50+ sunscreen, insect repellent, a camera, and binoculars if you’re keen on whale watching or birdwatching. If you’re visiting June to November, pack an extra warm layer for Knysna and beyond.
Where do Garden Route tours depart from?
Most of our Garden Route tours start and finish in Cape Town, which is the most natural entry point — it’s well connected internationally through Cape Town International Airport (CPT) and makes a brilliant city stop before or after the route.
From Cape Town, tours head east along the N2 coastal highway, taking in all the major highlights along the way. Some of our longer itineraries run in the opposite direction, starting in Gqeberha (formerly Port Elizabeth) and finishing in Cape Town — which works well if you’re combining the Garden Route with a visit to Addo Elephant National Park, or if you’re flying into the Eastern Cape.
If you’re not sure which direction makes most sense for your trip, our team can help you figure out the best fit.
What animals will I see on the Garden Route?
The Garden Route isn’t a traditional Big 5 safari, but don’t let that put you off — the wildlife here is genuinely impressive and surprisingly varied. On longer tours of 5 to 6 days, Addo Elephant National Park is typically included — it’s a malaria-free Big 5 reserve in the Eastern Cape and one of the best places in Africa to see large elephant herds up close, alongside lion, buffalo, zebra, and black rhino.
Shorter tours include game drives in private reserves where giraffe, white rhino, wildebeest, and antelope are regularly spotted. Out on the coast, keep an eye out for dolphins, Cape fur seals, and — between June and November — southern right whales.
The forests of Tsitsikamma are home to baboons, bushbuck, and over 200 bird species, including the striking Knysna turaco.
It’s a very different kind of wildlife experience from Kruger, but a wonderful one in its own right.
