Low Season

Jan - Mar

Hot, humid weather and summer rains make this the quietest time to visit. Some lodges close and travel can be more challenging, but the landscapes are vibrant, beaches are uncrowded, and adventurous travellers may enjoy rewarding cultural experiences and whale shark sightings.

Shoulder Season

Apr - May & Sept - Nov

These transitional months strike the perfect balance of good weather, fewer crowds, and great value. April and May bring lush green scenery after the rains, while September to November is prime for marine encounters such as whale sharks, manta rays, and turtle nesting along the coast.

Peak Season

Jun - Aug & Dec

The dry winter months and festive season bring the best conditions for island escapes and safaris. Calm seas and clear visibility make diving and snorkeling superb, while Gorongosa offers excellent game viewing. It’s the busiest time to travel, so early bookings are recommended.

Mozambique Travel FAQs

Can I combine a safari and beach holiday in Mozambique?

Yes — and honestly, it’s one of the best combination trips you can do in Southern Africa. Detour Africa runs tours that link Kruger National Park directly with the Mozambican coast, giving you the Big Five and barefoot beach time in a single itinerary. Some routes also pass through Eswatini, which adds a rewarding cultural layer to the journey.

We generally recommend spending your safari days in Kruger first, then winding down on the coast with snorkelling, diving, and slow beach mornings. Have a look at our 7, 10, or 14-day Kruger, Mozambique and Eswatini tours for a ready-made version of this classic combo.

How many days do I need in Mozambique?

For a proper Mozambique experience, you need at least 3–4 days on the coast — that’s the minimum to settle in, get out on the water, and actually feel like you’ve arrived somewhere. If you’re combining Mozambique with a Kruger safari and Eswatini, 7 to 14 days total works really well.

That gives you solid time in the bush, a chance to break the journey, and enough beach days to properly unwind. Shorter trips are possible, but the overland distances involved mean you’ll get far more value from a longer itinerary. Trust us on this one.

Do I need a visa for Mozambique?

Most nationalities do need a visa to enter Mozambique, but the good news is it’s straightforward to arrange. An e-visa is now available online, which makes the process much simpler than it used to be — though requirements can vary depending on your entry point, so it’s worth double-checking before you travel.

South African citizens and travellers from a handful of other countries are exempt from visa requirements for short stays. Maputo International Airport (MPM) is the main gateway, with regular regional connections from Johannesburg’s OR Tambo (JNB). Our team is happy to walk you through exactly what you’ll need when you book.

Is Mozambique good for diving and snorkelling?

Mozambique is genuinely world-class for underwater experiences — don’t let anyone tell you otherwise.

You can expect encounters with whale sharks (particularly around October), manta rays, humpback whales (July to September), loggerhead turtles, and a spectacular range of reef fish. Benguerra Island is a favourite for snorkellers, while divers tend to rave about the Two Mile Reef near Vilanculos. September to November is our pick for the best combination of marine wildlife and calm sea conditions.

Is Mozambique a malaria area, and do I need malaria tablets?

Yes, Mozambique is a malaria zone, and antimalarial prophylaxis is strongly recommended for all travellers. The risk is present year-round but tends to be higher during and after the wet season (November to March), when mosquito activity increases. The most commonly prescribed options are Malarone, Doxycycline, or Lariam — your GP or a travel health clinic can advise which suits you best. Alongside medication, use a DEET-based repellent, sleep under a net or in air-conditioned accommodation, and cover up at dusk.

What Our Travellers Say

★★★★★

I cannot say enough amazing things...

Severe flooding made it impossible for us to travel into Mozambique, which was originally planned for beach time and scuba diving. Instead of letting that portion of the trip feel like a loss, they quickly pivoted and rerouted us to a beautiful beach town in South Africa that ended up being just as incredible... Their flexibility and kindness during that situation showed how much they genuinely care about their travelers.

Well Done Detour!

We looked for an affordable private tour to Kruger Park, Mozambique and eSwatini. James from Detour Africa helped us in our planning and made our experience with this trip totally satisfying and remarkable. Everything went on as planned with high quality, seeing the big six (added whales at Ponta do Ouro) and a very good guide and driver. We have traveled to about 150 countries — we recommend James and Detour Africa.

Excellent super friendly service

I have been using this travel agency for booking all of my Southern Africa overland trips for 10 years now and once again I can only speak very highly about them. The new manager James is - just like his predecessor Rob - super friendly, very professional and proactive to offer you the best. The whole booking and payment process from abroad couldn't be easier and more secure. Thumbs up!
