- The Garden Route, a scenic road trip packed with beaches, forests, and charming towns. The Garden Route is one of the world’s most popular coastal drives.
- Cape Town & surrounds – Cape Town regularly ranks as one of the world’s best cities. With Table Mountain, Cape Point, and the Winelands all within reach.
- South African culture and history with township tours, local cuisine, and heritage sites, including Robben Island — where Nelson Mandela was imprisoned.
- Adventure activities with whale watching, shark cage diving, or bungee jumping from one of the world’s highest bridges.

Best Time to Visit South Africa
South Africa is a year-round destination — the best time depends on what you’re after. Safari is at its best in the dry winter (May–September), while Cape Town and the Garden Route shine in summer (November–March). Here’s how the year breaks down.
- JAN
- FEB
- MAR
- APR
- MAY
- JUN
- JUL
- AUG
- SEP
- OCT
- NOV
- DEC
Low Season
Nov - Mar
Over in Kruger it’s green season — lush landscapes, dramatic skies, newborn animals and excellent birdlife, though thicker vegetation makes game harder to spot.
This however is Cape Town and the Garden Route at their best: long sunny days, warm weather and almost no rain, ideal for beaches, coastal drives and the Cape Winelands. December and January are busy with local holidays, so book early.
Shoulder Season
Apr & Oct
The sweet spot for combining a safari with Cape Town and the coast. You’ll still get good game viewing with fewer crowds in the parks, paired with mild, pleasant weather in the Cape — great for hiking, wine tours and photography without the peak-season rush. Often the best value of the year for a trip that covers both.
Peak Season
May - Sept
Prime safari season. Cooler temperatures, little rain and thinning bush draw animals to the waterholes in Kruger and the surrounding reserves, so sightings are more frequent and predictable.
It’s also whale season along the Southern Cape coast and at Hermanus. The Cape is cooler and wetter now, but quieter and better value — ideal if safari is your priority and you don’t mind packing a jacket for the coast.
South Africa Travel FAQs
Do I need a visa to visit South Africa?
Citizens of many countries — including the United Kingdom, United States, Canada, Australia, and most EU member states — do not need a visa to visit South Africa and are granted visa-free entry for up to 90 days. Your passport must be valid for at least 30 days beyond your intended departure date and must contain at least two blank pages.
If you are travelling with children, you will need an unabridged birth certificate for each child.
Nationals of countries not on the visa-exempt list must apply for a South African tourist visa through their nearest South African embassy or consulate. Always verify current requirements with the South African Department of Home Affairs before travel, as regulations can change.
Do I need vaccinations for South Africa?
No mandatory vaccinations are required to enter South Africa unless you are arriving from a yellow fever endemic country, in which case proof of yellow fever vaccination is required.
Routine vaccinations (tetanus, hepatitis A, typhoid) are recommended by most travel health advisors.
Malaria is present in the low-lying areas of Limpopo and Mpumalanga provinces, including Kruger National Park, particularly during the wet season (October to April). Malaria prophylactics such as Malarone or Doxycycline are strongly advised for these areas — consult your doctor or travel health clinic at least 4 to 6 weeks before departure. Popular destinations including Cape Town, the Garden Route, and the Winelands are malaria-free.
When is the best time to visit South Africa?
South Africa is a year-round destination, but the best time to visit depends on where you are going and what you want to do.
For Kruger National Park safaris, the dry winter season (May to September) is optimal — wildlife gathers around water sources, vegetation is sparse, and game viewing is at its best. July and August offer the highest chances of Big 5 sightings.
For Cape Town and the Western Cape, the summer months (November to March) bring warm, sunny weather ideal for beaches, the Cape Winelands, and the Garden Route. The Cape experiences a Mediterranean climate, so winter (June to August) can be cold and wet.
The shoulder months of April and October offer good value across most of South Africa with fewer crowds.
Is it safe to travel to South Africa?
South Africa is a popular and well-established tourist destination visited by millions of international travellers each year. Like any major travel destination, it requires common-sense precautions.
Tourists are advised to avoid walking alone at night in unfamiliar urban areas, use reputable transport providers (including pre-booked airport transfers rather than unmarked taxis), and keep valuables out of sight.
Cape Town, the Garden Route, and major safari destinations are well set up for tourism with good infrastructure and security. Organised tours with a reputable operator like Detour Africa significantly reduce risk, as experienced guides handle logistics, transport, and accommodation throughout your trip.
Travel insurance with medical and emergency evacuation cover is strongly recommended for all visitors.
What is the currency in South Africa?
The currency of South Africa is the South African Rand (ZAR).
Major credit and debit cards (Visa and Mastercard) are widely accepted in hotels, restaurants, tour operators, and supermarkets throughout South Africa. ATMs are readily available in cities, towns, and airports. It is advisable to carry some cash in Rand for smaller purchases, tips, and rural areas where card payment may not be available.
Tipping is customary in South Africa — 10 to 15% in restaurants, and small amounts (R20–R50) for safari guides, hotel porters, and parking attendants are appreciated. Foreign currency can be exchanged at airports, banks, and authorised foreign exchange bureaus across the country.
What are the best places for a safari in South Africa?
South Africa offers some of the best safari experiences in Africa across a range of destinations and budgets.
Kruger National Park is the flagship — covering nearly 20,000 km², it is home to the Big 5 and over 147 mammal species. Adjacent private reserves like Sabi Sands offer exclusive, off-road safari experiences with exceptional leopard sightings.
Madikwe Game Reserve in the North West province is a malaria-free Big 5 destination ideal for families.
Addo Elephant National Park in the Eastern Cape is another malaria-free option and one of the best places in Africa to see large elephant herds.
The Hluhluwe-iMfolozi Park in KwaZulu-Natal is renowned for rhino conservation and white rhino sightings.
Detour Africa offers guided safari tours across all of these destinations.
Are there family-friendly safaris in South Africa?
South Africa is one of the top family safari destinations in the world, largely due to its range of malaria-free options.
Reserves such as Madikwe Game Reserve, Addo Elephant National Park, and the Waterberg region are all malaria-free Big 5 destinations suitable for children of all ages. Many lodges offer dedicated children’s programmes, junior ranger activities, and family accommodation units.
For families comfortable with malaria precautions, Kruger National Park offers excellent Big 5 game viewing with child-friendly rest camps and chalets.
Detour Africa specialises in tailoring family safari itineraries with age-appropriate game drives, flexible pacing, and accommodation that keeps both parents and children comfortable throughout.
What should I pack for a safari in South Africa?
For a South Africa safari, pack neutral-coloured clothing in khaki, olive, or beige tones — avoid bright colours and white, which can disturb wildlife and show dust. Early morning game drives can be cold even in summer, so bring a warm fleece or lightweight jacket (winter temperatures in Kruger can drop below 10°C).
Essential items include a wide-brimmed hat, UV-protection sunglasses, SPF 50+ sunscreen, and a DEET-based insect repellent for malaria-risk areas. Binoculars (8×42 magnification is ideal) significantly improve wildlife sightings. A camera with a zoom lens (200mm or longer) is recommended.
For Cape Town or city stays, smart-casual clothing is appropriate for restaurants and attractions.
A universal plug adaptor is needed as South Africa uses Type M plugs (230V).
What are the top places to visit in South Africa?
South Africa’s top travel destinations offer an extraordinary range of landscapes and experiences.
Cape Town is the country’s most visited city, famous for Table Mountain, the V&A Waterfront, Cape Point, and the Cape Winelands. Kruger National Park is Africa’s premier Big 5 safari destination. The Garden Route stretches 300km along the southern coastline linking George to Storms River, with highlights including Knysna, Plettenberg Bay, and the Tsitsikamma Forest. The Drakensberg Mountains in KwaZulu-Natal offer dramatic scenery and hiking. The Winelands towns of Stellenbosch, Franschhoek, and Paarl are world-class wine and food destinations. Johannesburg, as South Africa’s largest city, offers excellent restaurants, cultural history in Soweto, and serves as the main gateway for Kruger safaris.
Most of these destinations can be combined on a single tour of 10 to 14 days.
Is Cape Town worth visiting?
Cape Town is consistently ranked among the world’s top travel destinations and is widely considered one of the most beautiful cities on earth.
Key highlights include:
- Table Mountain National Park, accessible by cable car or hiking trail, with panoramic views over the city and both Atlantic and False Bay coastlines.
- The Cape Peninsula drive takes visitors through Chapman’s Peak, Cape Point, and the Boulders Beach penguin colony.
- The Cape Winelands — just 45 minutes from the city — encompass Stellenbosch, Franschhoek, and Paarl, offering world-class wine estates and restaurants.
- Cape Town’s beaches, including Clifton, Camps Bay, and Boulders, are exceptional.
The city is best visited between November and March when the weather is warm and dry.
Detour Africa offers Cape Town city packages and tours that combine Cape Town with Kruger and the Garden Route.
Can I visit Victoria Falls from South Africa?
Yes — Victoria Falls is one of the most popular extensions to a South Africa itinerary and is very easily combined with a Kruger safari.
The fastest route is a direct flight from Johannesburg OR Tambo International Airport to Victoria Falls Airport (VFA) in Zimbabwe, which takes approximately 1 hour 45 minutes. There are also less frequent direct flights from Cape Town.
Once at Victoria Falls, the falls, town, and most lodges are within a 20-minute transfer of the airport. Victoria Falls can be experienced from both the Zimbabwean side (Victoria Falls town) and the Zambian side (Livingstone), each offering different viewpoints and activities including white-water rafting, bungee jumping, sunset cruises, and helicopter flights over the falls.
Detour Africa offers combined South Africa and Victoria Falls tours departing from Johannesburg, typically 7 to 12 days in duration.
