The best time to visit Botswana is during the dry winter months from May to October, when wildlife viewing is at its best around waterholes and rivers.
Jun - Oct
These are the dry winter months — ideal for safaris across Botswana. With little to no rain, animals gather at rivers and waterholes, making them easier to spot.
Days are sunny and mild, but nights can get cold, especially in desert areas like the Kalahari.
This is the most popular travel season, so booking early is recommended.
Apr - May & Nov
April and May follow the summer rains, bringing cooler mornings, fresh green landscapes, and good road access.
November is hot (30–35°C) and marks the start of the rains in some regions. It’s a great time for fewer crowds and better value, especially for longer overland trips or lodge stays.
Dec - Mar
Botswana’s summer rains arrive during these months, often as afternoon thunderstorms. The landscape turns green, birdwatching is at its best, and the skies can be dramatic.
Wildlife is more spread out, and some areas in the Okavango Delta may be harder to access.
Expect hot and humid conditions — daytime temperatures can reach 35–40°C, especially in the north and central regions.
Visa-free entry (up to 90 days) for many countries including US, UK, EU.
Passport must be valid for at least 6 months with 3 blank pages.
Botswana is commonly reached through:
Maun Airport (main gateway to the Okavango)
Kasane Airport (closest to Chobe & Victoria Falls
Victoria Falls or Johannesburg (well connected with overland transfers or short connecting flights)
No mandatory vaccines unless arriving from a yellow fever country
Malaria precautions recommended for northern areas including the Okavango Delta, Chobe, and Moremi
Local SIM cards (Mascom, Orange) available in major towns
Wi-Fi available in lodges but often limited in remote areas
Power: 230V, 50Hz | Plug types D, G, and M (bring adapter).
Currency: Botswana Pula (BWP)
Credit Cards accepted in most lodges and towns
Tipping: 10–15% in restaurants, small amounts for lodge staff and guides
English is official language ; Setswana is the national language
Botswana promotes sustainable tourism & wildlife conservation
Try local dishes seswaa (slow-cooked pounded beef) & pap (maize porridge)

Excellent Botswana Tour.
We had an excellent tour planning to Zimbabwe by Louise
The tour was planned to the tee and she recommended great lodges to stay over. We had an excellent guide during this time and activities were planned to our liking…

I love this company!
They did a wonderful job arranging a 6-day Garden Route trip when I was in Cape Town in 2018 so of course I had to use their services again when booking my overland trip from Cape Town to Victoria Falls. Louise was so helpful answering dozens of my questions…

We recommend at least 7–10 days if you want to explore both the Okavango Delta and Chobe, and possibly include Victoria Falls. Shorter safaris are also available.
Most travellers do not need a visa to enter Botswana for tourism if staying up to 90 days. This includes citizens of the UK, US, EU countries, Australia, Canada, and many others.
Please note: We are not visa specialists, so we recommend checking with your local Botswana embassy or official government travel site to confirm the latest visa rules for your nationality.
Chobe is famous for boat safaris and large elephant herds, while the Delta offers mokoro trips and remote water-based camps. Both offer excellent wildlife but different landscapes.
Yes — many tours start or end in Victoria Falls with easy connections to Chobe National Park and beyond.
Botswana’s official currency is the Botswana Pula (BWP).
You can use credit or debit cards at most lodges, hotels, and shops in towns. In more remote areas, it’s a good idea to carry some cash. ATMs are available in major towns like Maun and Kasane.
Tip: US dollars are accepted at some lodges and for tipping, but Pula is best for everyday use.
You can usually see four of the Big 5 (lion, leopard, elephant, buffalo) in most major parks. Rhinos are rare and usually found only in specific areas like Khama Rhino Sanctuary or private reserves.
